The Agreement

Part One of Four in the Under Her Key short story series.

Lee had expected the conversation to happen in Mistress Tara’s playroom.

Instead, she chose the dining table.

There were no cuffs laid out. No crop resting beside her hand. No collar waiting in its box. The room held only the ordinary quiet of late evening: two cups of tea, a yellow legal pad, a black pen, and the small velvet pouch Tara had placed near her right hand.

Lee had noticed the pouch immediately.

He had tried not to stare at it.

“Sit,” she said.

He took the chair across from her, straightened his back, and placed both hands flat on his thighs. The posture came naturally now. Tara required attention when they discussed the structure of their dynamic, and Lee had learned that attention meant more than silence. It meant being present enough to understand what he was agreeing to.

Tara studied him for a moment.

“You know why we are here?”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“Tell me.”

Lee drew a measured breath. “To discuss chastity.”

“To discuss whether chastity belongs in our dynamic,” she corrected. “Not to assume that it does.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

Her tone was calm, but the correction settled something inside him. He had spent most of the week thinking about the device, the lock, and the fact that Tara had finally decided to consider it. In his imagination, the outcome had already been determined.

Tara had not made that assumption.

She opened the legal pad.

“Why do you want this?”

Lee had prepared an answer. He had rehearsed it while shaving, while showering, and again during the drive to her home.

“Because I want to give you control.”

“Over what?”

“My release.”

“That is the obvious answer.”

He paused.

Tara waited.

Lee looked down at his hands, then caught himself and raised his eyes again. “Over my attention, Mistress. My discipline. The way I respond to desire instead of letting it control me.”

“Better.”

She wrote something on the pad.

Lee resisted the urge to lean forward and read it.

Tara continued. “Are you asking for chastity because you believe it will make you more submissive?”

“No, Mistress.”

“Are you sure?”

He hesitated.

Her eyebrow rose.

“I think it may help me focus my submission,” he admitted. “But I understand that wearing a device does not prove anything by itself.”

“Correct. A locked man can still be selfish, manipulative, inattentive, or dishonest. Metal does not create character.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“And chastity is not a shortcut to intimacy. It will not force me to give you more attention simply because you are locked.”

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

The question landed harder than he expected.

Tara folded her hands over the legal pad. “Some submissives discover that chastity becomes the center of every conversation. Every service becomes a bid for release. Every kind act becomes a performance. Every difficult moment becomes an emergency requiring reassurance from the keyholder.”

Lee felt warmth creep up the back of his neck.

She noticed.

“Have you imagined that?”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“I thought so.”

Her voice was not mocking. That made the admission feel even more exposed.

“I have imagined wanting your attention more,” he said carefully.

“You probably will.”

“And I have imagined being frustrated.”

“You definitely will.”

A faint smile touched her mouth, but it disappeared almost immediately.

“What I will not tolerate,” Tara said, “is you turning that frustration into pressure. You will not sulk. You will not perform excessive service and then expect a reward. You will not ask repeatedly whether you have earned release. You will not make your discomfort the center of my day.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“If you need to report a physical concern, you will report it immediately. If you are simply impatient, you will learn the difference.”

Lee nodded.

Tara tapped the pen once against the paper.

“No nodding. Answer me.”

“Yes, Mistress. I understand.”

“Good.”

She turned to a fresh page.

“This is not punishment.”

Lee glanced toward the velvet pouch again.

“No, Mistress.”

“It may be used within discipline later, but the decision to begin is not corrective. You are not being locked because you failed. You are not being deprived because I am angry. We are testing whether this form of control supports your service and strengthens our agreement.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“That distinction matters. I do not want you attaching shame to the device unless humiliation has been specifically negotiated.”

“It hasn’t.”

“No.”

Tara made another note.

“The device will represent granted authority,” she said. “Not ownership of your body in every circumstance. Not permanent access. Not the removal of your right to speak.”

Lee felt some of his nervousness ease.

Tara saw that too.

“You expected me to make this more dramatic.”

“A little, Mistress.”

“Fantasy is dramatic. Responsible control is usually paperwork.”

That pulled a brief laugh from him.

Tara allowed it.

Then she reached for the velvet pouch and loosened the drawstring.

The sound was small.

Lee’s attention snapped to it anyway.

She removed a compact metal device and placed it on the table between them.

The room seemed to change.

Lee had seen it before. Tara had shown it to him two nights earlier so he could inspect the design, ask questions, and make sure the size appeared appropriate. It had looked clinical then. An object. A piece of equipment.

Tonight, beside the legal pad and the tiny brass lock, it looked different.

It looked like a decision.

Tara watched him study it.

“Still interested?”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“Do not answer quickly because you think confidence will please me.”

Lee inhaled slowly.

He looked at the device again, then at Tara.

“Yes,” he said. “I am still interested.”

“Why?”

“Because I want the control to be real, not just something we talk about when it is convenient.”

Tara’s expression softened, though her posture did not.

“That is an honest answer.”

She moved the device aside and returned to the list.

“We begin with a trial period of seventy-two hours.”

Lee blinked. “Three days?”

“Yes.”

He had imagined a week. Perhaps longer.

Tara read the surprise on his face. “Disappointed?”

“No, Mistress.”

“Another quick answer.”

“A little,” he admitted.

“Why?”

“Three days does not feel like very long.”

“It will feel longer once the novelty wears off.”

He could not argue with that.

“We start conservatively,” she continued. “You have never worn this device for an extended period. I am not interested in proving how much you can endure. I am interested in whether you can wear it safely and whether it functions as intended.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“You will check the skin every morning and evening. You will report swelling, numbness, discoloration, persistent pain, broken skin, difficulty urinating, unusual temperature changes, or anything else that concerns you.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“You will not wait because you are afraid I will be disappointed.”

“I won’t.”

“You may be tempted.”

Lee said nothing.

Tara leaned slightly forward. “Pain is not devotion. Hiding an injury is not obedience. If you conceal a problem to avoid ending the trial, I will consider that a serious breach of trust.”

“I understand, Mistress.”

“Say the whole thing.”

He knew what she wanted.

“I will report any physical problem immediately. I will not hide pain or injury to prove that I can continue.”

“Good.”

She wrote again.

“Hygiene.”

Lee shifted slightly in his chair.

Tara’s gaze sharpened. “If you cannot discuss cleaning a device without embarrassment, you are not mature enough to wear one.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“You will clean yourself and the device thoroughly. You will follow the process we reviewed. The device may be removed for cleaning if necessary, and that removal does not count as failure.”

He nodded, then caught himself. “Yes, Mistress.”

“You will not rush. You will not improvise. You will not use any product that may irritate your skin simply because it smells better.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“And you will dry everything completely.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

Tara turned the page.

“Access.”

The word tightened something low in Lee’s stomach.

She noticed the change in his breathing.

“I will hold the primary key,” she said. “A sealed emergency key will remain in your possession.”

His eyes moved toward her.

“That is not negotiable,” she added.

“I wasn’t going to object.”

“You were thinking about it.”

Lee gave a reluctant smile. “Yes, Mistress.”

“Why?”

“Because knowing I have a key makes it feel less complete.”

“Knowing you have emergency access makes it safer.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“The key will be sealed in a signed envelope. If you open it, you will tell me. If there is an emergency, you will use it without waiting for permission.”

“What counts as an emergency?”

“Any situation in which waiting could cause harm. Severe pain. Swelling. Injury. A medical appointment where removal is necessary. A problem with the locking mechanism. An urgent event that makes continued wear unsafe.”

“And if I am unsure?”

“You contact me. If you cannot reach me and believe there may be a risk, you remove it.”

Lee absorbed that.

Tara’s voice grew firmer. “You do not need my permission to protect yourself from injury.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“That sentence should remain true no matter how deeply our dynamic develops.”

He held her gaze. “It will.”

“Good.”

She placed the emergency key in a small envelope, sealed it, signed across the flap, and slid it toward him.

Lee picked it up.

The envelope weighed almost nothing, yet it complicated the fantasy in a way he had not expected. He had imagined absolute helplessness. Tara had given him something more demanding instead: responsibility.

“You will keep that somewhere private and accessible,” she said.

“Yes, Mistress.”

“Not in your car.”

“No, Mistress.”

“Not buried beneath thirty things where you cannot reach it quickly.”

“No, Mistress.”

“And not displayed like a trophy.”

Lee almost smiled. “No, Mistress.”

Tara placed the primary key beside her teacup.

It was tiny.

It should not have looked powerful.

It did.

“Communication,” she said.

Lee set the envelope down.

“You will send me a brief check-in in the morning and evening. Physical condition, comfort level, sleep, mood, and anything unusual.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“You may tell me that you are frustrated.”

His eyes lifted.

“You may tell me that you are aroused, distracted, uncomfortable, embarrassed, or uncertain. Honest communication is not complaining.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“But repetition intended to wear me down is pressure. Asking the same question in different words is pressure. Acting as though I am cruel because I follow the agreement you requested is pressure.”

“I understand.”

“If you decide you no longer consent to the trial, you may end it.”

The statement surprised him more than it should have.

Tara did not miss the reaction.

“What?”

“I know I can withdraw consent.”

“You know it intellectually.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“But emotionally, you expect that ending early would disappoint me.”

Lee looked away for half a second. “Yes.”

“It may disappoint me,” she said.

His gaze returned to hers.

Tara continued before he could speak. “Consent does not require me to feel nothing. I may be disappointed. You may be disappointed. We can still stop.”

Lee let that settle.

Her honesty carried more weight than reassurance would have.

“I will not punish you for stopping,” she said. “I will expect you to explain why, once you are calm and comfortable enough to do so. That conversation would be about understanding, not retaliation.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“Likewise, I may end the trial.”

“For safety?”

“For safety, behavior, incompatibility, or because I decide it is not supporting the dynamic the way I intended.”

Lee’s mouth tightened.

Tara noticed. “You do not like that.”

“No, Mistress.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to succeed.”

“This is not a test you pass by suffering longest.”

He looked down at the device.

“What would success look like?” he asked.

Tara considered him.

“Honesty,” she said. “Self-awareness. Responsible care. The ability to experience frustration without making it my burden. Continued service without turning every action into negotiation. Respect for the agreement even after the excitement fades.”

Lee swallowed.

“And trust,” she added. “Not blind trust. Not silent endurance. The kind of trust that includes speaking when something is wrong.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

She closed the legal pad.

The sound was final enough to make his pulse jump.

“Do you have questions?”

Lee had expected to feel eager at this point. Instead, the conversation had stripped away much of the fantasy and left the reality exposed beneath it.

Three days.

Morning and evening reports.

Cleaning.

Safety.

Responsibility.

The ability to stop.

The inability to pretend that suffering would impress her.

He looked at the device again.

“What happens at the end of seventy-two hours?”

“We remove it, inspect everything, and discuss the experience.”

“And after that?”

“I decide whether another period is appropriate. You decide whether you still want chastity included in your service.”

Lee nodded slowly.

Tara waited.

“Yes, Mistress.”

“Any other questions?”

He hesitated.

“Ask.”

“Will you tell me when I am going to be released?”

“No.”

His breath caught.

“You know the trial ends after seventy-two hours,” she clarified. “You do not need the exact minute.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“I want you to experience uncertainty within a safe boundary.”

The phrase lodged in his mind.

Uncertainty within a safe boundary.

That was not the helplessness he had imagined.

It was more deliberate than that.

Tara stood.

Lee remained seated until she looked toward the open space beside the table.

“Kneel.”

He moved from the chair and lowered himself onto the rug.

Tara came to stand before him, the device in one hand and the lock in the other.

“Last opportunity to pause before we begin,” she said.

Lee looked up at her.

The confidence he had carried into the room had changed. It had not disappeared, but it had become quieter. Less performative.

More honest.

“I want to begin, Mistress.”

“Say it clearly.”

“I consent to the seventy-two-hour trial under the terms we discussed.”

Tara held his gaze for another moment.

“Good.”

She instructed him to prepare himself and helped him fit the device slowly, checking placement and comfort as they went. There was nothing hurried or ceremonial about the process. She asked questions. Adjusted the fit. Had him stand, sit, and walk a few steps. She checked for pinching and made him describe what he felt rather than merely assuring her that everything was fine.

Only when she was satisfied did she guide him back to his knees.

The open lock rested between her fingers.

Lee stared at it.

It was smaller than the keys on his ordinary key ring. A simple mechanism. A practical object.

His heart still beat harder as Tara threaded it into place.

“Look at me,” she said.

He raised his eyes.

“This does not make you more submissive.”

“No, Mistress.”

“It does not make me more Dominant.”

“No, Mistress.”

“It represents a choice we have made together.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“And while I hold the key, I also hold responsibility for the authority you have granted.”

Lee’s throat tightened.

“Yes, Mistress.”

Tara closed the lock.

The click was quiet.

It was also unmistakable.

For one suspended moment, Lee felt nothing except the pressure of the device and the impossible significance of that small sound.

Then Tara withdrew the key.

His eyes followed it automatically.

She turned it once between her fingers before slipping it onto a fine chain around her

neck. The key disappeared beneath the collar of her blouse.

Not far away.

Completely beyond him.

Lee had imagined this moment often. In those fantasies, he had felt overwhelmed by arousal, triumph, and the thrill of surrender.

The reality was different.

The reality was the weight at his body.

The sealed emergency key waiting on the table.

The knowledge that Tara could choose not to release him simply because he wanted it.

The knowledge that he had agreed to that uncertainty.

Tara touched two fingers beneath his chin and lifted his face.

“You have become very quiet.”

“It feels different now.”

“How?”

Lee searched for the answer.

“More real.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I understood what I was giving you.”

“And now?”

“Now I understand that thinking about surrender is not the same as experiencing it.”

Tara’s expression softened.

“That is why we begin with three days.”

She removed her hand and stepped back.

Lee remained kneeling.

The key rested somewhere against her skin, hidden beneath dark fabric.

His key.

No.

Her key now.

Not because she had taken it.

Because he had placed it in her hand.

“Stand,” Tara said.

Lee rose carefully.

“Walk.”

He crossed the room and returned.

“Any pain?”

“No, Mistress.”

“Pinching?”

“No.”

“Pressure?”

“Yes, but not painful.”

“Good.”

She handed him the sealed envelope.

“Put this in your overnight bag. Then bring me your tea cup.”

Lee accepted it.

The ordinary instruction startled him.

The moment had felt enormous. Tara had already returned to the evening.

He placed the emergency key safely in his bag, then collected the cups and carried them to the kitchen.

The device shifted slightly as he moved, reminding him with every step.

Tara followed more slowly.

At the sink, Lee began rinsing the cups.

“You expected a ceremony,” she said behind him.

“A little.”

“You received an agreement.”

He glanced over his shoulder.

Her fingers brushed the hidden key beneath her blouse.

Lee felt the reality of it all over again.

“Yes, Mistress.”

Tara smiled.

“An agreement will last longer.”
