Under Her Key Pt 2

Part Two: The Adjustment

Lee woke before the alarm.

For a few disoriented seconds, he did not understand why.

Then he moved.

The device shifted with him, and the memory of the previous evening returned all at once: the dining table, Tara’s questions, the sealed emergency key, and the quiet click that had sounded far louder than it should have.

He lay still beneath the sheets.

Morning light pressed faintly against the curtains. The room was cool. Nothing hurt. There was pressure, awareness, and an unfamiliar sense of containment, but no sharp discomfort.

He reached automatically toward his phone.

Then stopped.

Tara had required a morning check-in, but not the instant he opened his eyes. She had told him to inspect himself first, move around, use the bathroom, and decide what he was actually feeling before reporting it.

Lee sat up carefully.

Even that ordinary motion felt different.

He had expected chastity to affect desire. He had not expected it to change the way he rolled out of bed, the angle at which he bent to pick up his clothes, or the brief pause before every familiar movement.

The device was not painful.

It was simply impossible to forget.

He stood and walked to the bathroom.

The first inspection took longer than he expected. He checked for redness, swelling, pressure marks, and anything that looked concerning. Everything appeared normal. He cleaned himself as Tara had instructed, dried thoroughly, then stood in front of the mirror and examined the fit again.

The man looking back at him appeared unchanged.

That was almost insulting.

Lee had imagined some visible transformation. He had surrendered control. Tara carried the key against her skin.

Yet his face still needed shaving. His hair still stood up at the back. The laundry basket remained full. A coffee mug from the previous night sat beside the sink.

His life had not become ceremonial simply because something significant had happened within it.

He returned to the bedroom and opened the morning check-in template Tara had sent him.

Physical condition: No pain, swelling, numbness, discoloration, or broken skin. Mild pressure and awareness during movement.

Sleep: Interrupted twice. Adjusted position and returned to sleep.

Mood: Calm. Curious. More aware of the device than expected.

Anything unusual: Clothing fit may require adjustment.

He read it twice before sending.

The response came several minutes later.

Mistress Tara: Good. Eat, dress, and continue your normal morning. Report any change. Do not spend the day studying yourself.

Lee stared at the final sentence.

He had already checked himself three times.

Lee: Yes, Mistress.

He placed the phone facedown.

Then picked it up again.

There was no new message.

He set it down with more force than necessary and went to make coffee.

Choosing clothes became the first real complication.

Lee usually dressed without much thought. Dark trousers, button-down shirt, belt, shoes. He worked in an office where nobody paid enough attention to one another’s clothing unless someone arrived in something visibly inappropriate.

That morning, every pair of trousers seemed designed to betray him.

One pinched when he sat. Another pressed against the device when he bent. A third fit comfortably while standing but shifted awkwardly when he walked across the room.

He changed four times.

By the fifth attempt, irritation had begun to simmer.

Tara had said clothing might require adjustment. She had not said how ridiculous it would feel to stand half-dressed in front of a mirror, trying to determine whether a seam would become unbearable after three hours at a desk.

He finally chose looser trousers and a longer shirt.

The result was acceptable.

Not attractive, he thought.

Then immediately wondered whether Tara would notice.

That thought annoyed him even more.

His phone remained silent on the dresser.

Lee looked at it while tying his shoes.

He had not expected constant communication. Tara had said that explicitly.

Still, some part of him had imagined that the first morning would feel important enough to produce more than four sentences.

He resisted the urge to send another message.

There was nothing to report.

That did not prevent him from wanting to report something.

Anything.

The realization followed him to work.

By ten o’clock, Lee had learned that concentration could be disrupted by something far less dramatic than pain.

Every minor shift in his chair reminded him of the device.

Crossing one leg over the other felt wrong.

Leaning forward made him aware of pressure.

Standing too quickly made the weight shift.

Nothing was severe. Nothing qualified as a physical concern.

It was merely present.

Constantly.

His inbox filled. A coworker asked him to review a report. Someone had scheduled a meeting during his usual lunch break. The printer jammed. The coffee in the break room had gone cold.

Under ordinary circumstances, the morning would have been mildly irritating.

Locked, every irritation seemed sharper.

Lee caught himself checking the time repeatedly.

Nine forty-two.

Ten sixteen.

Ten thirty-eight.

Three days had sounded short at Tara’s table.

Now each hour appeared to be negotiating for its own importance.

He opened their message thread.

Her last instruction remained visible.

Do not spend the day studying yourself.

Lee locked the phone and returned it to his desk drawer.

Five minutes later, he wanted it again.

He told himself he was checking for work messages.

He was not.

At eleven, Tara sent him a single text.

Mistress Tara: Physical status?

Relief moved through him so quickly that it embarrassed him.

He answered at once.

Lee: No pain or swelling. Some pressure depending on how I sit. Clothing is manageable. I am distracted.

The reply came a minute later.

Mistress Tara: Adjust your chair and continue working.

That was all.

Lee read the message twice.

Something sour moved beneath his ribs.

He had said he was distracted. He had admitted difficulty.

She had told him to adjust his chair.

His first thought was that she did not understand.

His second was that she understood perfectly.

He shifted the chair height, changed the angle of the seat, and discovered that the pressure eased.

That irritated him too.

At lunch, Lee sat alone in his car with the engine off.

He had brought food from home but had no appetite. The device was not preventing him from eating. His body simply felt preoccupied, as though attention had become a limited resource and most of it had been assigned elsewhere.

He opened Tara’s messages again.

He typed:

I did not realize this would be so distracting.

Then deleted it.

He typed:

I am struggling more than expected.

Deleted that too.

Both statements were true.

Neither seemed necessary.

He set the phone aside and forced himself to eat half the sandwich.

A few minutes later, he picked the phone up again.

Lee: I am noticing that every inconvenience feels larger today.

This time he sent it.

Tara did not answer immediately.

Lee finished the sandwich while waiting.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

He returned to the office without a reply.

By the time her message arrived, he had built an entire argument in his head.

Mistress Tara: That is useful information. What are you doing with it?

He stared at the screen.

He had expected reassurance.

Possibly praise for recognizing the pattern.

Maybe an acknowledgment that the first day was difficult.

Instead, she had given him a question.

Lee: Trying not to react to everything.

Mistress Tara: Trying how?

He frowned.

Lee: Pausing before I complain. Adjusting what I can. Continuing with work.

Mistress Tara: Good. Continue.

Lee placed the phone down.

He did not feel good.

He felt dismissed.

That word remained with him for the next hour.

Dismissed.

As though Tara had invited him into a difficult experience and then stepped away from it.

By two o’clock, the feeling had grown large enough that he could no longer tell whether it was justified.

He began drafting another message.

I thought you would be more involved today.

He read it.

The sentence looked accusing.

He changed it.

I am not sure what level of support I should expect.

That sounded more reasonable.

He nearly sent it.

Then he remembered Tara’s warning from the dining table.

Some submissives discovered that every difficult moment became an emergency requiring reassurance from the keyholder.

Lee deleted the message.

The words left the screen but not his mind.

By the time he arrived at Tara’s home that evening, frustration had settled into him like a second device.

She opened the door and studied him.

“You are early.”

“Six minutes, Mistress.”

“I am aware.”

Lee stepped inside, removed his shoes, and placed his overnight bag near the wall.

Tara had asked him to return after work so she could inspect the fit and observe how he was moving. Lee had imagined the visit throughout the day.

In some versions, she greeted him with visible approval.

In others, she touched the hidden key and told him how well he was doing.

Instead, she turned toward the kitchen.

“Wash your hands. Dinner needs finishing.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

He followed her.

The meal was almost complete. A pot simmered on the stove. Vegetables waited on a cutting board.

Tara pointed toward them. “Slice those.”

Lee washed his hands, collected the knife, and began.

The work should have settled him. Service usually did. Tara’s kitchen had become familiar through repetition: the location of the cutting boards, the way she wanted towels folded, which knives were used for which tasks.

Tonight, he could not find the rhythm.

The device shifted when he leaned against the counter.

He adjusted his stance.

The knife struck the board too hard.

Tara glanced over.

“Problem?”

“No, Mistress.”

She returned to the stove.

Lee sliced another carrot.

A minute later, he shifted again.

Tara lowered the heat beneath the pot.

“Lee.”

“Yes, Mistress?”

“You are announcing your discomfort with your entire body.”

His shoulders tightened. “I am not trying to.”

“No?”

He set the knife down.

Tara waited.

Lee took a breath. “I am uncomfortable.”

“Physically?”

“Not exactly.”

“Then describe it accurately.”

He hated that she always made him find the precise word.

“Restless,” he said. “Distracted. Irritated.”

“With me?”

The directness of the question startled him.

“A little.”

Tara nodded once. “Why?”

Lee looked at the vegetables.

“Because I thought you would check on me more.”

“I checked on you twice.”

“The morning message was required. Then you asked about physical status.”

“That is checking on you.”

“I know.”

“But it was not the kind of attention you wanted.”

He looked up.

Tara’s face was calm.

That calm made his own frustration feel loud and undisciplined.

“No, Mistress.”

“What did you want?”

Lee struggled to answer without sounding childish.

“I wanted to feel that this mattered to you.”

Tara turned off the burner.

Then she faced him fully.

“You believe my level of interest should be measured by the number of messages I send while you are at work?”

“No.”

“That is what you just said.”

“I said I wanted to feel that it mattered.”

“And because I did not spend the day discussing the device with you, you concluded that it did not?”

Lee looked away.

“Eyes on me.”

He obeyed.

Tara leaned against the opposite counter.

“This matters enough that I spent an evening negotiating it carefully. It matters enough that I researched the device, reviewed fit and safety, prepared an emergency key, and required you to return tonight so I could check you in person.”

Lee felt heat rise into his face.

“Yes, Mistress.”

“It matters enough that I am responsible for how I use the control you gave me.”

“Yes.”

“What it does not require is constant performance.”

Lee remained silent.

Tara continued. “You are treating your discomfort as a demand for proof.”

His jaw tightened.

“Am I wrong?”

“No, Mistress.”

“You expected each difficult moment to produce reassurance, attention, or praise.”

“Yes.”

“And when it did not, you became resentful.”

“A little.”

“More than a little.”

Lee exhaled.

“More than a little, Mistress.”

Tara pointed toward the chair at the kitchen table.

“Sit.”

Lee obeyed carefully.

She took the chair across from him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Tara said, “This is the adjustment.”

Lee frowned slightly.

“Not the clothing,” she clarified. “Not the pressure when you sit. Not interrupted sleep. Those are practical adjustments.”

Her fingers rested lightly on the tabletop.

“This is the emotional adjustment. You gave me control over something that occupies a great deal of your attention. That does not mean I agreed to devote an equal amount of my attention to it.”

Lee absorbed the words.

They felt unfair.

They also felt true.

“I thought the control would create more connection,” he admitted.

“It may.”

“But not automatically.”

“No.”

He looked down.

Tara’s voice softened without becoming indulgent.

“Lee, I am not indifferent to what you are experiencing.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He hesitated.

“I know it now.”

“You knew it before. You simply did not feel it every moment.”

That distinction hurt more than he expected.

Tara watched him carefully.

“Tell me what is happening.”

Lee’s first impulse was to summarize the day efficiently.

Then he realized she had finally offered the attention he had wanted, and that made him wary of using it badly.

“My clothes felt wrong,” he began. “I changed several times. At work, I could not stop noticing the device. Every time I moved, it pulled my concentration away.”

Tara listened.

“I kept checking my phone,” he continued. “I wanted you to message me. When you did, I wanted more than you sent.”

“What did you imagine I would say?”

“That you were thinking about me.”

“I was.”

“That you were pleased.”

“I had not yet seen enough to decide whether I was pleased.”

Lee gave a small, humorless laugh. “That sounds like you.”

“It should.”

He lowered his hands to his thighs.

“I wanted you to tell me I was doing well.”

“You were completing the first several hours of a three-day trial.”

“I know.”

“You had not done badly.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No.”

The honesty of that answer deflated something inside him.

Tara leaned back.

“You are accustomed to seeing service produce an immediate result.”

Lee considered that.

“I suppose.”

“You prepare a meal, and I eat it. You clean a room, and the room is clean. You complete a task, and the task is finished.”

“Yes.”

“Chastity gives you no immediate finish line. The discomfort does not automatically earn praise. The restraint does not automatically create progress. You must continue behaving well while the experience remains unresolved.”

Lee looked at her.

“That is much harder.”

“Yes.”

He expected her to say more.

She did not.

The silence stretched.

This time, Lee did not rush to fill it.

Finally, Tara asked, “Do you want to stop?”

His answer rose quickly.

“No, Mistress.”

“Think.”

He did.

The day had been frustrating. His concentration had suffered. He had resented her. He had felt embarrassed by how much he wanted attention.

None of that meant he wanted the device removed.

“No,” he said again, more quietly. “I want to continue.”

“Why?”

“Because I think this is showing me something I did not expect.”

“What?”

Lee stared at his hands.

“How quickly I can make my submission about what I receive from you.”

Tara’s expression changed slightly.

Approval, perhaps.

But she did not give him the word.

“Go on,” she said.

“I thought I was giving you control. Today, I kept trying to turn that control into attention for myself.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted reassurance whenever it became difficult.”

“Yes.”

“And I was angry when you did not give it.”

“Yes.”

Lee looked at her. “You could soften that a little.”

“I could.”

He almost smiled.

Tara did not.

“Would that help you understand it?”

“No, Mistress.”

“Then I will not.”

He accepted the correction.

After a pause, Tara stood.

“Finish the vegetables.”

Lee rose.

This time, when he returned to the cutting board, the device still felt present. His frustration had not vanished.

But it no longer felt like an unanswered accusation.

He adjusted his stance and resumed slicing.

Tara turned the burner back on.

They completed dinner without further discussion.

After the meal, Tara directed Lee to clear the table and wash the dishes.

Ordinarily, he enjoyed the routine.

Tonight, fatigue pressed at him.

He had slept poorly. The day had demanded more attention than usual. The device added a low-grade physical awareness that made every movement feel deliberate.

As he rinsed a plate, Tara entered the kitchen carrying her cup.

“You missed a spot on the counter.”

Lee looked over.

A thin streak of sauce remained near the stove.

“I will get it.”

His tone was sharper than intended.

Tara set the cup beside the sink.

“Stop.”

Lee froze.

“Turn around.”

He faced her.

“What was that?”

“I said I would get it.”

“You snapped.”

“I am tired.”

“That explains it.”

He waited.

“It does not excuse it,” she finished.

“No, Mistress.”

Tara picked up a dish towel and folded it once.

“You are allowed to be tired.”

“Yes.”

“You are allowed to be frustrated.”

“Yes.”

“You are allowed to tell me either.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“You are not allowed to treat ordinary correction as an attack because you are uncomfortable.”

Lee lowered his eyes.

“Look at me.”

He obeyed.

“If the device is making you incapable of basic courtesy, we remove it.”

His stomach tightened.

“No.”

“No what?”

“No, Mistress. It is not making me incapable.”

“Then demonstrate that.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

She pointed toward the counter.

Lee cleaned the missed spot, then returned to the sink.

His hands moved more carefully.

Tara remained in the kitchen, not hovering but present.

After a few minutes, he said, “I am tired and more emotional than I expected.”

“That is a useful report.”

“I do not like admitting that.”

“I know.”

“It feels weak.”

“No. It feels vulnerable.”

Lee dried a plate.

“Is there a difference?”

“Yes.”

He waited.

Tara took the dry plate from him and placed it in the cupboard.

“Weakness is inability,” she said. “Vulnerability is exposure. You are not unable to function. You simply dislike being seen while your control is imperfect.”

Lee looked at her.

That landed close enough to make him uncomfortable.

“You are enjoying this conversation too much,” he said.

Tara’s eyebrow rose.

He immediately straightened. “Mistress.”

A faint smile appeared.

“Careful.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

She handed him another plate.

But the tension had eased.

The evening inspection took place in Tara’s bedroom.

She kept the process practical.

Lee undressed while she washed her hands and gathered what she needed. She checked the fit, skin condition, circulation, and movement. She asked him to describe every area of pressure and had him sit, stand, and walk again.

“No pain?” she asked.

“No, Mistress.”

“Any numbness?”

“No.”

“Pinching?”

“Occasionally when I sit badly, but it stops when I adjust.”

“Skin irritation?”

“No.”

Tara examined him one final time.

“Physically, you are doing well.”

The praise was small.

It affected him far more than it should have.

Tara noticed the change in his breathing.

“There it is,” she said.

Lee looked up. “What?”

“The reward response.”

He flushed. “You said I was doing well.”

“Physically.”

“I heard the qualification.”

“Did you?”

“Yes, Mistress.”

Tara stepped back and handed him his sleep clothes.

“Emotionally, you have spent much of the day trying to make the experience produce attention.”

Lee dressed.

“That sounds worse every time you say it.”

“It should become less comfortable before it becomes useful.”

He pulled the shirt over his head.

“What would you prefer I do when I want your attention?”

“Ask honestly.”

He paused.

“Just ask?”

“Yes.”

“That seems too easy.”

“Manipulation is often more complicated than honesty.”

Lee absorbed that.

Tara sat at the edge of the bed.

“If you want reassurance, you may say, ‘Mistress, I am feeling uncertain and would value reassurance.’”

“That sounds exposed.”

“It is.”

“If you do not want to give it?”

“I will tell you.”

“And then what?”

“You tolerate the answer.”

Lee gave her a doubtful look.

Tara’s mouth curved. “That is the part you dislike.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“You may also ask for time, conversation, affection, or guidance. But you may not manufacture a crisis to obtain them.”

“I did not manufacture anything today.”

“No. You were tempted to magnify ordinary discomfort until it justified more attention.”

That was accurate enough that he could not argue.

Tara held out her hand.

“Phone.”

Lee gave it to her.

She opened the message thread and scrolled through their exchange.

“You drafted several messages you did not send.”

He blinked. “How do you know?”

“Because I know you.”

She returned the phone.

“What did they say?”

Lee sat in the chair opposite her.

“One said I thought you would be more involved.”

“Accusation.”

“Yes.”

“Another?”

“I was not sure what support I should expect.”

“Better.”

“I deleted it.”

“Why?”

“I thought I was pressuring you.”

“Asking for clarification is not pressure.”

Lee frowned.

Tara continued. “Repeatedly asking after receiving an answer would be pressure. Framing your discomfort as my failure would be pressure. A clear question is communication.”

“I am not always sure where the line is.”

“That is why we discuss it.”

Lee looked at the phone in his hands.

“I spent most of today trying not to ask for anything.”

“That was not my instruction.”

“No.”

“What was my instruction?”

“Not to make every difficult moment the center of your day.”

“And not to turn frustration into pressure.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“Neither means silence.”

Lee nodded.

Tara waited.

“Yes, Mistress.”

“Good.”

She stood and crossed to the dresser.

The key beneath her blouse shifted as she moved.

Lee’s attention followed it.

Tara stopped.

“You are staring.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“What do you want?”

He almost said release.

The word formed before he examined it.

What he actually wanted was more complicated.

“I want to know that you still want this.”

Tara turned fully toward him.

“That is an honest request.”

Lee waited.

She came closer and stopped in front of him.

“I still want the trial to continue,” she said. “I still believe the control may serve our dynamic. And I am still willing to carry the responsibility attached to the key.”

The tension in his chest loosened.

Tara touched his cheek.

“I am not withdrawing simply because I refuse to make the device the center of our relationship.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“You matter more than the device.”

Lee closed his eyes briefly.

Her hand remained against his face.

“The device matters because of what it reveals,” she continued. “Not because metal and a lock are inherently meaningful.”

He opened his eyes.

“What has it revealed so far?”

“That you confuse attention with care when you feel vulnerable.”

The answer was blunt.

Lee laughed once under his breath.

“I walked into that.”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

“You are more emotionally affected by uncertainty than you expected. You become irritable when ordinary tasks compete with a strong internal focus. You are capable of recognizing manipulation before acting on it, but you still resent having to stop yourself.”

Lee considered each point.

“All in one day.”

“It has been a productive day.”

“It has been an exhausting day.”

“Those can be the same day.”

Tara withdrew her hand.

“Bed.”

Lee looked toward the guest room.

Tara shook her head.

“You will sleep here tonight.”

Surprise moved through him.

“With you?”

“Yes.”

His body reacted before his judgment could intervene, and the device answered with immediate, uncomfortable pressure.

Lee inhaled sharply.

Tara watched without sympathy or cruelty.

“Physical concern?”

“No, Mistress.”

“Then breathe.”

He did.

The pressure eased slowly.

Tara turned down the bed.

“You will sleep. Not perform suffering. Not remain awake imagining what the key means. Not repeatedly shift so I notice your frustration.”

Lee gave her a tired look.

“You have planned for every embarrassing possibility.”

“Most of them are predictable.”

He climbed into bed carefully.

Tara joined him a few minutes later, extinguished the lamp, and settled beside him.

The darkness changed the room.

Lee became aware of her breathing, the warmth of her body, and the hidden key somewhere between them.

The device felt more restrictive than it had all day.

He adjusted his position.

Tara spoke into the dark.

“Comfort issue?”

“No, Mistress.”

“Then stop narrating with your body.”

Lee went still.

Several minutes passed.

He tried to sleep.

Instead, he found himself thinking about every part of the day: the clothes, the chair, the ignored drafts, the sharp answer in the kitchen.

Then Tara’s voice came quietly.

“What are you thinking?”

“That I did not handle today as well as I imagined I would.”

“No.”

The word surprised him.

“No?”

“You imagined handling a fantasy. Today, you handled reality.”

Lee lay on his back, looking into the dark.

“Not gracefully.”

“Grace was not required.”

“What was?”

“Honesty. Safety. Correction. Continuation.”

He turned his head toward her.

“I almost resented you all day.”

“You did resent me.”

“A little.”

“More than a little.”

Lee smiled despite himself.

“Yes, Mistress.”

“And yet you came here. You told me the truth. You accepted correction. You did not conceal a physical problem or open the emergency key.”

“No.”

“That is adjustment.”

The word felt different now.

Less like failure.

More like a process.

Tara shifted closer and rested one hand lightly against his chest.

The contact was neither reward nor tease.

It was simply present.

Lee felt his breathing slow beneath her palm.

“Sleep,” she said.

“Yes, Mistress.”

This time, the instruction did not feel ordinary.

It felt like permission.

Lee woke once during the night.

The room was dark and silent.

Tara’s hand no longer rested on his chest. She had turned away, breathing evenly.

The device pressed against him, familiar now in its unfamiliarity.

He wanted to wake her.

Not because anything was wrong.

Because he felt alone inside an experience she controlled.

The desire was powerful enough that he nearly spoke her name.

Then he remembered the conversation.

Ask honestly.

Do not manufacture a crisis.

Accept that wanting attention did not always make the moment appropriate for requesting it.

Lee lay still.

He examined what he felt.

No pain.

No fear.

No urgent concern.

Loneliness, perhaps.

Vulnerability.

The strange emotional distance created by being beside the person who held the key while knowing she could not experience the restraint in the same way he did.

He placed one hand against his own chest where hers had been.

The gesture did not replace her touch.

It steadied him anyway.

A few minutes later, Tara shifted in her sleep and moved closer without waking.

Lee closed his eyes.

He did not know whether choosing not to wake her counted as service.

It did not matter.

For the first time that day, he did not need the moment to prove anything.

In the morning, Tara was already awake.

She sat against the headboard reading while Lee completed his first careful movements of the day.

“How did you sleep?” she asked.

“Better than the first night.”

“Physical status?”

“No pain. No numbness. Mild pressure.”

“Emotional status?”

Lee sat at the edge of the bed.

“Less certain.”

Tara closed the book.

“About continuing?”

“No.”

“Then about what?”

He considered the question.

“About what I thought chastity would feel like.”

“And what does it feel like?”

“Ordinary.”

Tara waited.

Lee smiled faintly.

“Ordinary in a very intrusive way.”

“That is closer.”

“I expected constant intensity.”

“You received trousers that fit badly and a chair that needed adjustment.”

“And resentment because you did not text enough.”

“Yes.”

He looked back at her.

“I think I wanted the experience to make me feel exceptional.”

Tara’s expression softened.

“And instead?”

“It made me aware of how ordinary my reactions are.”

“Impatience.”

“Yes.”

“Need for reassurance.”

“Yes.”

“Frustration when reality does not resemble fantasy.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

Tara placed the book aside.

“That awareness is more useful than feeling exceptional.”

Lee knew she was right.

He did not yet enjoy that she was right.

She rose and retrieved the legal pad from the dresser.

“Morning report.”

Lee looked at her.

“Here?”

“Here.”

He recited the physical details first. Tara wrote them down.

Then she asked about mood, sleep, concentration, and the previous night.

Lee told her about waking and wanting to disturb her.

“Why didn’t you?” she asked.

“Nothing was wrong.”

“That is not the full answer.”

He thought.

“Because I realized wanting your attention did not automatically create a need for it.”

Tara looked up from the pad.

There it was again—that small shift in her expression.

This time she gave him the word.

“Good.”

The praise warmed him.

He allowed himself to feel it without immediately asking for more.

Tara noticed that too.

“Better,” she added.

Lee laughed.

“Careful, Mistress. You may overwhelm me.”

Her eyebrow rose.

He lowered his gaze with a smile.

“Sorry, Mistress.”

“No, you are not.”

“No.”

She closed the pad.

“Today, you will return to work. You will wear the same loose trousers if they were comfortable. You will adjust your chair before you begin. You will check in at lunch only if something changes physically or emotionally enough to require discussion.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“You may message me to ask for reassurance.”

Lee looked up.

“May I?”

“Yes.”

“Will you give it?”

“If I believe it is useful.”

He exhaled through his nose.

“There is the difficult part again.”

“Yes.”

Tara touched the chain at her neck.

The key remained hidden.

“You are learning that access to me is not controlled by the device.”

Lee’s attention fixed on her fingers.

“No, Mistress.”

“And my care is not measured by how often I discuss your restraint.”

“No.”

“What is it measured by?”

He remembered the dining table.

“Behavior.”

Tara nodded.

“Consistency. Responsibility. Attention. The choices I make with the authority you granted.”

“Yes, Mistress.”

“And your submission?”

“Also behavior.”

“Not discomfort?”

“No.”

“Not arousal?”

“No.”

“Not how many hours you tolerate?”

“No, Mistress.”

Tara stepped closer.

“What, then?”

Lee answered slowly.

“Honesty. Self-control. Service that is not a bid for reward. Communication without pressure. And accepting that not every difficult moment is about me.”

Tara reached beneath her blouse and brought the small key into view.

It hung against her fingers, bright in the morning light.

Lee felt the familiar tightening inside him.

Tara watched him experience it.

Then she released the key.

It disappeared beneath the fabric again.

“Get dressed,” she said. “You have a day to live.”

Lee stood.

The device shifted.

The awareness remained.

So did the frustration, the vulnerability, and the knowledge that Tara would not rescue him from every uncomfortable feeling.

But something had changed.

The lock no longer felt like the only thing he was adjusting to.
