At Her Heel

Jerry woke before the alarm.
He remained perfectly still on the narrow cushion beside Lydia’s bed, listening to the quiet rhythm of her breathing and waiting for permission to move.
The polished wooden floor was hard beneath his knees. His thighs already ached from sleeping curled on the cushion rather than stretching out, but discomfort was not a reason to break position. Lydia had taught him that much during his first week of training.
Comfort was given.
Movement was permitted.
Obedience was expected.
A minute later, the alarm sounded.
Lydia reached toward the bedside table and silenced it without looking at him.
Jerry lowered his head.
“Good morning, Mistress.”
She sat up slowly, letting the silence settle over the room before placing both feet on the floor.
“Position.”
Jerry moved immediately.
He rose from the cushion, crossed the short distance between them on his knees, and settled at her feet. His back remained straight. His hands rested against his thighs. His eyes stayed lowered.
Lydia examined him without speaking.
She never hurried these moments. The inspection was part of the training. Jerry understood that every detail mattered—the angle of his shoulders, the position of his knees, the direction of his gaze, even the steadiness of his breathing.
“Collar.”
Jerry lifted his chin.
Lydia retrieved the wide leather collar from the nightstand. The buckle clicked into place around his neck, followed by the quieter sound of the lock.
Only then did Jerry allow himself to breathe more deeply.
The collar changed nothing and everything.
He belonged to Lydia with or without it, but when it rested around his throat, the rules became sharper. His thoughts quieted. His responsibilities narrowed to one simple purpose.
Listen.
Obey.
Serve.
Lydia fastened a short lead to the ring at the front.
“Feet.”
Jerry bent forward and kissed the top of each bare foot.
“Thank you, Mistress.”
“For what?”
“For allowing me to begin the day in service.”
Lydia gave the lead a brief tug.
“Kitchen.”
Jerry followed beside her, moving carefully on his hands and knees. The position was not meant to imitate an animal for amusement. Lydia had explained that on the first day.
It was a discipline.
Jerry was accustomed to walking upright, making his own decisions, choosing his own pace, and filling silence with unnecessary words. At Lydia’s heel, none of those habits remained useful.
He watched her feet.
He matched her movement.
He waited for direction.
When they reached the kitchen, Lydia stopped without warning.
Jerry stopped beside her.
A fraction too slowly.
The lead tightened.
“Again.”
Lydia turned and walked back toward the doorway.
Jerry followed.
She stopped.
He stopped instantly.
She changed direction.
Jerry adjusted with her.
She moved faster.
He kept pace, refusing to let his knees or palms distract him.
After several passes across the kitchen, Lydia halted near the center of the room.
Jerry froze.
“Better.”
“Thank you, Mistress.”
“Place.”
Jerry crawled to the square mat near the kitchen table and settled into position. His knees touched the lower corners. His palms rested flat. His head remained raised just enough that Lydia could see his face.
She began preparing coffee.
Jerry watched her silently.
He knew the morning rules.
He would not speak unless addressed.
He would not shift without permission.
He would not leave the mat.
His role was to remain attentive and available.
Lydia poured water into the coffee maker, measured the grounds, and pressed the button. Then she leaned against the counter and looked at him.
“What are you?”
“Your submissive, Mistress.”
“What is your position?”
“At your feet.”
“What is your purpose?”
“To listen, obey, and serve.”
“What happens when you forget?”
“I am corrected.”
“And when you remember?”
“I become worthy of greater responsibility.”
Lydia studied him.
“Do you want greater responsibility?”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Wanting is irrelevant.”
Jerry swallowed.
“Yes, Mistress.”
“What matters?”
“Whether I have earned it.”
The coffee maker began to hiss behind her.
Lydia crossed the room and stood over him.
Jerry did not lower his eyes. Lydia required eye contact during questioning. Looking away would suggest avoidance, and avoidance had no place in his training.
She drew one finger beneath his collar.
“You enjoy this.”
It was not a question.
“Yes, Mistress.”
“You enjoy being made to kneel.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“You enjoy being led.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“You enjoy having your choices narrowed until obedience is the only one remaining.”
Jerry felt heat rise through his chest, but he kept his voice steady.
“Yes, Mistress.”
Lydia tightened her finger against the collar.
“Enjoyment does not excuse carelessness.”
“No, Mistress.”
“Pleasure does not replace discipline.”
“No, Mistress.”
“And affection does not weaken my expectations.”
“No, Mistress.”
She released him.
“Good.”
Lydia poured her coffee and sat at the table.
Jerry remained on the mat.
“Breakfast.”
He moved at once.
A covered bowl and bottle of water had been placed near the edge of the mat before bed. Jerry removed the lid with his teeth, set it aside, and waited.
Lydia took one slow sip of coffee.
“Eat.”
Jerry lowered his head.
The meal was simple—oatmeal, banana, and a small amount of peanut butter. Nutritious, measured, and chosen by Lydia. He ate carefully, using no utensils and keeping his hands flat against the mat.
It was not graceful.
That was part of the point.
Jerry had spent much of his life protecting his dignity as though it were something fragile. Lydia had taught him that dignity did not disappear when he knelt, crawled, ate from a bowl, or wore her collar.
His dignity came from choosing his submission honestly.
His pride came from doing difficult things well.
A small piece of banana slipped over the edge of the bowl.
Jerry stopped.
He looked toward Lydia.
She was watching.
“Clean it.”
Jerry lowered his head and picked the piece from the mat with his mouth.
“Continue.”
He finished the meal and pushed the bowl forward with his nose.
Lydia checked it.
“Water.”
Jerry drank.
When he finished, he returned to his original position.
“Thank you for my meal, Mistress.”
Lydia placed her coffee cup on the table.
“Today’s lesson is attention.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“You have improved your posture. Your responses are faster. You have learned to control unnecessary speech.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“But yesterday, you anticipated three commands.”
Jerry’s stomach tightened.
He remembered each one.
He had moved toward the door before Lydia told him to follow. He had picked up her shoes when she had only looked toward them. He had placed his head in her lap because he believed she intended to offer affection.
Each action had seemed helpful at the time.
Each had been a failure to wait.
“I remember, Mistress.”
“You confused eagerness with obedience.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Explain the difference.”
Jerry considered his answer carefully.
“Eagerness is doing what I think will please you. Obedience is doing what you have instructed.”
“And which do I require?”
“Obedience.”
Lydia rose.
Jerry remained still.
She walked around him slowly.
“Today, you will not assume.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“You will not anticipate.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“You will not interpret a glance, a gesture, or a pause as permission.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
She stopped behind him.
“You will wait.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
The first exercise seemed simple.
Lydia moved through the house while Jerry remained on his mat.
She opened cabinets.
He stayed.
She picked up her shoes.
He stayed.
She stood beside the door.
He stayed.
She looked directly at him.
Jerry’s muscles tensed, but he did not move.
Lydia opened the door.
Morning air drifted through the kitchen.
Jerry remained on the mat.
Several seconds passed.
“Come.”
He moved immediately.
Jerry crossed the kitchen on his hands and knees, stopped at Lydia’s side, and waited.
She clipped the lead to a ring set into the wall near the door.
“Sit.”
Jerry sat back on his heels.
“Stay.”
Lydia stepped outside.
The door remained open.
Jerry could see the porch, the yard, and Lydia standing just beyond the threshold. Every instinct urged him to follow. He had been trained to remain near her. He wanted to demonstrate attentiveness. He wanted to prove he was ready.
But she had told him to stay.
So he stayed.
Lydia walked farther into the yard.
Jerry’s breathing grew heavier.
She disappeared around the side of the house.
He stared straight ahead.
Minutes passed.
His knees began to ache. The collar felt heavier. The open doorway seemed to invite him forward.
He did not move.
Eventually, Lydia returned.
She stepped inside and closed the door.
Jerry waited.
She removed the lead from the wall.
He waited.
She walked behind him.
He waited.
Her hand settled on top of his head.
Jerry closed his eyes but did not lean into the touch.
“Good boy.”
The praise struck deeper because he had not tried to earn it prematurely.
“Thank you, Mistress.”
Lydia stroked his hair once.
“Do you understand now?”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Tell me.”
“Obedience is not proving that I know what you want. It is trusting you to tell me.”
Her fingers tightened gently in his hair.
“That is exactly right.”
The next exercise was harder.
Lydia led Jerry into the living room and positioned him on the floor beside her chair.
“Down.”
Jerry lowered himself until his chest touched the rug.
“Head.”
He placed his cheek against her foot.
“Still.”
Jerry became motionless.
Lydia read for nearly an hour.
At first, the position felt easy. Then his neck began to stiffen. His shoulder cramped. His breathing warmed the leather of her shoe.
He wanted to adjust.
He wanted to lift his head for only a moment.
He wanted to ask whether she had forgotten him.
But Lydia never forgot him.
The thought settled him.
She knew where he was.
She knew what she had required.
She knew what he could endure.
Jerry remained still.
When Lydia finally closed the book, he was trembling.
“Up.”
Jerry rose into a kneeling position.
“Why didn’t you move?”
“Because you told me to remain still.”
“Were you uncomfortable?”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Did you trust me?”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Were you afraid I had forgotten you?”
Jerry hesitated.
Lydia’s expression sharpened.
“Truth.”
“Yes, Mistress. For a moment.”
“And what did you decide?”
“That my fear did not change the command.”
Lydia regarded him for several seconds.
Then she reached down and unlocked the collar.
Jerry remained kneeling as she removed it.
The loss of its weight left him strangely exposed.
“Stand.”
Jerry rose carefully. His knees protested, and Lydia steadied him with one hand against his chest.
The strictness in her expression softened, though her authority did not.
“Training is finished for the morning.”
“Thank you, Mistress.”
“You did well.”
Jerry lowered his gaze.
Pride warmed him, quieter and stronger than excitement.
Lydia touched his chin and lifted his face.
“Do not hide from praise.”
“No, Mistress.”
“You waited when waiting was difficult. You obeyed when anticipation would have been
easier. You trusted me while you were uncomfortable.”
Her thumb moved across his cheek.
“That is what I want from you.”
Jerry’s voice was softer when he answered.
“That is what I want to give you.”
Lydia nodded toward the chair.
“Come here.”
This time, Jerry did not move.
Not until she added the command.
“Head in my lap.”
Only then did he kneel beside her and rest his cheek against her thighs.
Lydia placed one hand in his hair.
“Good boy.”
Jerry closed his eyes.
The morning had not been about pretending to be an animal.
It had not been about humiliation, spectacle, or stripping away his humanity.
It had been about stripping away assumption.
At her feet, Jerry did not become less.
He became attentive.
He became deliberate.
He became obedient.
And when Lydia’s hand rested possessively against the back of his neck, Jerry understood that being treated as her pet was not an escape from responsibility.
It was the most demanding form of service she had ever asked him to give.
